Hello English Festival Members!
I hope your Christmas break was a great one! We are now 3 months away from the 41st annual YSU English Festival and will be meeting after school on Tuesday, January 15th in Room 119 in the middle school to discuss Kwame Alexander's "The Crossover". This text has been unlike any other that we've read so far, and for those of you who've had me for English class in 7th grade you might see some resemblances to Nikki Grimes' "The Bronx Masquerade". What are your thoughts about a novel that tells a story based solely upon poetic structure, rather than one which is traditionally prose? How about a novel which is divided into quarters like a basketball game, rather than chapters like a text? Make note of your favorite poems... Mine include "Why We Only Ate Salad For Thanksgiving", "Fast Break", and "The Last Shot"...and bring them to our meeting for discussion. Looking forward to seeing you all then! (Luther)
YSU Summer Honors Institute applications are available in the guidance office. Students in grades 9 - 11 who have been formally identified as gifted may apply. Students who has a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA or a minimum composite ACT score of 26 may also apply. Completed application packets are due by April 5, 2019. Students are responsible for returning the application to YSU by the deadline. (Haidaris)
