Hubbard Eagle to Compete in National Competition

Hubbard sophomore Isaac Powell feels at home when all eyes are on him. The 16 year-old’s knack for entertaining has landed him parts in the high school musical, a spot on the district’s drum line and a role as the district’s mascot, the Hubbard Eagle.

In his capacity as the Hubbard Eagle, Powell recently caught the attention of Varsity Brand. He has been selected as one of four finalists in the sports apparel company’s mascot competition. On May 11, 2019, Powell will attend the School Spirit Awards Show in Orlando, where Varsity Brands will select the best mascot in the country and award the winner $3,000.

“Just being nominated is an honor to me,” said Hubbard High School student Isaac Powell.

Powell, who says his fascination with mascots began as a small child, has held the role as Hubbard Eagle since his eighth grade year. In that time, he’s made over 150 appearances at district sporting events and activities, at community parades and gatherings and at Akron Children’s Hospital.

“It’s so much fun to see the reactions from the crowd, even the opposing team’s crowd when I win them over,” said Powell. “Akron Children’s Christmas breakfast is one of my favorite events. I love seeing the kids and being able to do this for them.”

Powell dedicates a lot of time to being the Hubbard Eagle. In addition to his appearances, he maintains the Eagle’s social media accounts, edits videos of his Eagle performances and shares them online. He designs Hubbard Eagle graphics, as well as buys and designs jerseys for the mascot. He hopes to continue to build the program and recruit students who would be interested in taking over for him when he graduates. Even though graduation is still two years away, Powell has his sights set The Ohio State University, where he hopes the skills he’s mastered as Hubbard's Eagle will allow him to serve as Brutus Buckeye.
