Students showcase engineering skills at Mahoning Valley Miniature Bridge Building Competition

The Annual Mahoning Valley Miniature Bridge Building Competition, hosted by Youngstown State University (YSU), took place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, attracting 24 teams from 12 area high schools. Since its inception in 2008, this event, organized by the Mahoning and Trumbull County Engineers, YSU, and MS Consultants, Inc., has aimed to introduce high school students to the field of civil engineering.

During the morning of competition, students constructed their bridges on site within specified time frames, adhering to competition specifications. Following lunch and glue drying time, bridges were judged based on design criteria before undergoing load testing until structural failure. The winning bridge was determined by meeting design criteria and demonstrating the most efficient load carrying capacity to structure weight ratio. Additionally, awards were presented for various aspects of civil engineering.

This year, Hubbard High School proudly sent two teams under the guidance of physics teacher Irene Pizanias. Both teams, consisting of Mia King, Ayah Mufleh, Ava Flowers, Zachary Svensson, Brady Ifft and Matthew Bobovnik, displayed commendable effort and skill in the competition.
