Eagle Joint firefighters teach Hubbard Elementary students in grades K-4 about fire safety and emergency preparedness during a school visit.

Hubbard Elementary students in grades K-4 recently learned important fire safety tips during a visit from the Eagle Joint Fire Department.

Firefighters reviewed several important steps students and their families can take to stay safe in the event of a fire:

  • Have an escape plan and make sure there are two ways out of your home.

  • Choose a meeting spot outside where everyone can gather.

  • Never go back inside a burning home.

  • Make sure your home has working smoke detectors. If you do not have smoke detectors, contact the fire department for help.

  • If you see matches or a lighter within reach, tell an adult.

  • If your clothing catches fire, remember to stop, drop and roll.

  • If you become trapped in a home during a fire, never hide. Firefighters need to be able to find you.

  • Stay low to the ground because smoke rises.

  • Use the back of your hand to check whether a closed door is hot before opening it.

The visit gave students an opportunity to learn practical fire safety skills and ask questions while learning from local firefighters.
